TEACHING SPEAKING SKILLS BY USING JOURNALIST’S QUESTIONS TO THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI RUPIT

The problem of this study: Was it significantly effective to teach speaking skill by using Journalist’s Questions to the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri Rupit?” Therefore, the objective of this study was to find out whether or not it was significantly effective to teach speaking skill by using Journalist’s questions to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Rupit in the academic year of 2014/2015. There were two hypotheses in this study, namely the null hypothesis (Ho) and alternative hypothesis (Ha). The Population of this study was all of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Rupit in the academic year of 2014/2015 which consisted of 339 students. The sample was taken through cluster random sampling, it was class X IIS 3 consisted of 42 students. The writer used pre-experimental method and the data were collected through oral test. To analyze the data, the writer used four techniques, individual score, conversion of individual score, normality testing and matched t-test. Based on the result of the data analyzed, there was improvement of the average scores or the average ability from the pre-test (45.84) to the post-test (72.21). The students made different average score 26.37 as their progress, and their average ability changed from the “Difficulty” to be “Satisfactory”. Beside that, it could be proved by the result of the tobtained was 7.83, which was higher than 1.684 as its critical value. It means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Therefore, it was significantly effective to teach speaking by using Journalist’s Questions to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Rupit in the academic year of 2014/2015.

AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE FOUND IN MODERN SHORT STORIES BY ROBBERT J. DIXSON’S BOOK

The problems of this research were: “What are six types of figurative language used in Robbert J. Dixson‟s Book?”. Therefore, the objectives of this research were to describe the types and  the meaning of figurative language in Robbert J. Dixson‟s Book entitled “To Love and To Honor, John Rossiter’s Wife, A Case of Suspicion, Will of the Wind, Irene’s Sister, The Wrong House, Detour to Romance, Decision, Final Break, and Better Late”.The researcher used a descriptive research method to classify and analyze the data. The technique used in collecting the data was library research. After investigating the kinds and meanings in 10 short stories in Robbert J. Dixson‟s Book, the researcher found 86 figurative languages. The figurative language in Robbert J. Dixson‟s Book has been analyzed in kinds: there were (1) 4 metaphors, (2) 31 similes, (3) 12 personifications, (4) 21 paradoxs, (5) 12 hyperboles, and (6) 6 litotes. The researcher found the meanings of figurative languages in Robbert J. Dixson‟s Book (86) conceptual meaning and (86) connotative meaning.

AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH LEXICAL COLLOCATION FOUND IN THE JAKARTA POST NEWSPAPER

Abstract

This study is about English lexical collocation in the Jakarta post newspaper. The data were taken from the headlines of the Jakarta post newspaper which published on April 4th - 9th 2016. The writer aimed at answering to problems. The problems were: (1) what kinds of English lexical collocation were found in the Jakarta post newspaper which published on April 4th - 9th 2016? (2) what are the meanings of English lexical collocation were found in the Jakarta post newspaper which published on April 4th - 9th 2016? To answer those problems the writer analyzed   kinds of English lexical collocation are found in The Jakarta Post Newspaper. The objectives of this study were to identify kinds and the meanings of English lexical collocation. This study was designed as a qualitative research. The qualitative research presented the data of study in form of qualitative description. The result of this study showed that (1) there are 42 English lexical collocation found in the Jakarta post newspaper and (2) the meanings of English lexical collocation were 41 denotative and 1 connotative. The sources of the data in this study were sentences and utterances that contain collocation.

AN ANALYIS OF SLANG USED BY CHARACTERS IN “ HANCOCK MOVIE ”

The problem of this study “What were slang used by Characters in “Hancock movie” and also what were the meaning of slang used by Characters in “Hancock movie”. Therefore, the objective of this study is focus on slang used in “Hancock movie” and The meaning of slang focus on the lexical and context meaning. The method used in this thesis is descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected from observation, watching and analysis descriptive qualitative method. The findings show that there were 7 types of slang used by male and female characters, such 1) Cockney Slang, 2) Public House Slang, 3) Workmen Slang, 4) Tradesman’s Slang, 5) Slang of Comerse, 6) Slang in public School, 7) Society Slang. The results of analysis also reveal that gender may affect the use of slang. It can be seen from the total number that slang used by male is (47) slang, and females is (10) slang. Therefore, it can be concluded for males characters used slang, such 1) Cockney Slang (31,92%), 2) Public House Slang (12,76%), 3) Workmen Slang (0%), 4) Tradesman’s Slang (0%), 5) Slang of Comerse (0%), 6) Slang in Public school (4,26%), 7) Society Slang (51,06%) and for females characters used slang such 1) Cockney Slang (30%), 2) Public House Slang (0%), 3) Workmen Slang (10%), 4) Tradesman’s Slang (0%), 5) Slang of Comerse (10%), 6) Slang in Public school (10%), 7) Society Slang (40%).

AN ANALYSIS OF APOLOGIZING IN AMERICAN ENGLISH EXPRESSED IN BAD NEIGHBORS

The Problem of the research was: The objective of the research was to 
describe the variation of apology and reason of apology in “Bad Neighbors”
movie. The research employ a descriptive qualitative method. The object of the 
research was “Bad Neighbors” movie. The data sources were primary and 
secondary source. The researcher used documentation method for technique
collecting the data and the data analyzed used descriptive technique.  In
classifying and analyzing the apology, the researcher chooses “Bad Neighbors”
movie as object. This study mainly aimed to describe variation of apology and
reason of apology, the researcher uses Yule, Levinson and Austin, Olstain and
Cohen theory. The results of the research there were the strategies of apology and
types of apology 20 data from apologizing expressions in the   analysis. They
were divided into two types of apologizing expressions, (5) direct and (15) direct
apologies.  There were (3)An expression of regret (An offer of repair), (2) A
request for forgiveness  (An explanation or account of the situation), (2) An
expression of  regret (A promise of forbearance), (1) An offer of apology (A
promise of forbearance), (6) An expression of  regret (An acknowledgement of
responsibility), (2) An expression of regret (An explanation or account of the
situation) and (2)An offer of apology (An acknowledgement of responsibility).
The reasons why the types of apology are employed by the characters depend on
the degree of mistakes, situation, social status and relationship between the
characters. Maintaining  the  harmony between  the  characters  was significant 
since  it  was  required  to  maintain  the relationship between the  offenders  and
offended.
